Living Lab Salzburg is being launched to provide better services for Salzburg’s citizens, businesses and visitors is a key component in making the city and its regional context more competitive.
Salzburg has attained a unique globally recognised brand for music, quality of life, culture and natural beauty. With flourishing tourist successes, it is easy to forget the hard work it takes to build an maintain such a brand – let alone to fill it with new economic meaning. Emerging high-innovation activities in the city include the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) cluster, new media, research and industrial activities with an increasing technological content.

To retain a competitive position, Salzburg therefore has to build on its competences and recognise that strategic planning, in particular in relation to mobile services, may act as an innovation but also brand catalyst.

If local commitment can be found to build on previous successes through a commitment by public, private and institutional actors, the vision of Salzburg as a living laboratory for mobility can be attained, with unique competitive advantages.

The results of this survey show significant opportunities, exiting projects under-way, yet also a lack of visioning that mobilises local resources and convinces inward investors. Our recommendation is for Salzburg to embark on the process to establish a Living Lab as part of the Living Labs Europe network, to continue the formulation of a mobile strategy (mStrategy) with international references.

Becoming part of the network will allow Salzburg to exchange best practices with other cities committed to mobility, whilst opening a unique European marketplace to innovators and their solutions from Salzburg.
