The mobile cluster of Lund  is one of the top ranked mobile & wireless clusters in Europe. As a medium sized municipality by Swedish standards (115,000 inhabitants) Lund is dominated by the university, with its 34,000 students and more researchers than any other Scandinavian university. Lund also hosts many high-tech companies and a relevant innovation promotion platform drawing on the expertise from the university.

As in the rest of Sweden, penetration rates are very high and great interest is shown in mobile solutions. Sony Ericsson employs almost 2,000 people in Lund, and Ericsson Mobile Platforms another 600. Lund also hosts the so-called “Creative Design Center” as well as the “Ericsson Consumer Lab”, the latter being yet another important actor in the effort to understand end-users.

IDEON, created already in 1983, was the first science park in Scandinavia. A large number of successful applications have been generated by IDEON. Today, the science park includes more than 200 companies and some 2,200 employees. A large number of smaller companies have found themselves benefiting from the larger actors in Lund.

Lund has its own mobile cluster that has emerged from Ericsson’s early mobile phone business in the 1980’s, and many technologies and spinouts have emerged from this cluster and gained worldwide adoption.
