IMPRESSIONS FROM THE LIVING LABS GLOBAL SUMMIT IN ZURICH

An event like the one in Zurich has to be very precise, professional, and informative, but first and foremost it has to create a setting where people are comfortable and open to new ways of solving old problems. The hundred participants had the best start to the matchmaking, when, on the night prior to the event, they were invited to a cocktail party hosted by Living Labs Global and 22@ Barcelona at the Park Hyatt. There was lively conversations going throughout the night, and people were eagerly continuing their talks when they met for coffee on the morning of the event. Then the managing director of Living Labs Global, Sascha Haselmayer, held a welcome speech where he stipulated the need for a much more flexible global market for mobility. He was followed by Judith Romera and Jordi Sacristan who presented all of the great possibilities that Barcelona have to offer the mobile innovation community. A feature new to the Living Labs Global Events was introduced in the form of the Showcase elevator pitch: People were given four minutes each in which to present their service or application to the whole room, and the process was graciously moderated by the director of HP Invent Centers, Paul Jeremaes. This extremely brief presentation of the different innovations was very positively received, and it greatly heightens attention and understanding when you are shown the essential workings of a thing.

There was a natural continuation of the elevator pitches during the short coffee break in the hall, where Living Labs prominently featured Showcase posters that had been submitted by the different companies. The following panel sessions included people from private companies, the public sector, universities, and cluster organizations, and the sessions were divided into three major themes: ICT/media-enabled services in cities, Healthcare service innovation, and Service innovation and design in cities. These panels gave some enlightening perspectives on their respective subjects, and the presentations quickly developed into general discussions which continued long into the big lunch. Most of the participants stayed to talk and meet people long after lunch and coffee, and once again it showed that the Living Labs Global model is a different and fertile way to create contact with partners. One of the newest members of Living Labs Global, Dirk Tangemann from Capasitor Foundation, has the following praise of the concept: "When we heard first of Living Labs Global we thought this would be a professional network organization that could help us building relationships. But, actually, it is more than that. Living Labs Global reaches out to a wide international range of parties like companies (regardless of size), research centers, city or regional governments, etc., and it tries to find the right relationships that could or even should be matched with each other in order to export innovative solutions throughout the international community. At the Matchmaking Summit in Hamburg this year, Capacitor found a partner who will help us in implementing iCarYou in Germany." Towards the end of the event, new members were presented with their certificates, and it will be a pleasure to see them become just as satisfied as our old members are.
