Living Lab Budpest covers Budapest, the capital of Hungary, with a population of over 1.6 million inhabitants. The city is one of the most important entry points for businesses looking to establish themselves in Eastern Europe. The Budapest region is the uncontested economic and commercial engine of Hungary, accountable for 35% of the national GDP.

Budapest is also considered the most knowledge-intensive part of Hungary and the only real centre of innovation. Most R&D activity is found here, and the net income per employee is 25% higher than national average.

There is a small community of very advanced users, predominantly in universities and R&D centres, driving the development of some highly innovative mobile solutions. But the general public has yet to embrace mobile commerce on a larger scale. Only 20 years ago, hardly more than a third of all households had access to fixed telephony. Today roughly 9 out 10 people in Budapest own a mobile phone. There is a positive innovative climate for mobile applications, and high energy in the R&D community.
Several of the largest European telecom players are represented in Budapest and several Hungarian universities are involved in international partnerships with mobile service and technology providers. On a local level, there are a considerable number of large high-quality educational institutions, research institutions, R&D centres and science parks, some of which are actively involved in the development of mobile technologies.

As a recent EU member with a great market potential as well as a strategic location in Eastern Europe, and a well educated work force Budapest is on its way to become and an established R&D cluster with international implications.
